LOOKING UP

What man meant for evil, God intended for good. We see this in the life of Joseph in the Old Testament (Gen 50). And, we see it in the life of St. Patrick, whose death many will commemorate this week. And, sure, St. Patrick’s Day has probably veered from its original design (haven’t many holidays?); and some of the St. Patrick stories have been aggrandized over time. Yet, one key aspect of his story mirrors the theme of God frequently using life’s twists and the intent of evil men to further His own purposes. Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders around the age of sixteen. After several years of captivity, he escaped back to his British homeland (fun fact: St. Patrick wasn’t Irish). He heard God tell him to return to Ireland and share the gospel of Christ with its people. His familiarity with their language and customs gave him a head start. His captors were bent on evil, but, God was using this unfortunate series of events to reach more people. I want to be that kind of dad who sees the opportunity in the trial, and helps my children to see it as well.

Start with questions and let those guide you in helping their situation and spiritual growth. Your game plan will help your families discern the problem and build towards the solution.

ALONG THE TRAIL

We often use this area in our weekly newsletter to share fun quotes on this week’s topic. However, we’d like to ask you to take this particular week and pray for the people and country of Ukraine. Our hearts are heavy as we watch the events unfold. We firmly believe that God can redeem this situation for good, even if right now, we only see the pain and loss.

YOUR NEXT HILL

Look for the redeeming value. As in the lives of Joseph and St. Patrick, you’ve probably seen bad things be turned to good. Can you recall that time in your life when you thought God had dealt you a bad hand, only to later see how He used it for good? I recall not getting into a particular college (ironically, their mascot is Irish). Then, I went to my second pick, and it was there I met my lovely wife and God really intersected my life. Sure He could’ve done that anywhere, but I look back and see His hand in what I thought was a less than desirable situation. I bet you can see some too. Share one with your family this week.
