APPLY SCRIPTURE

When you’re generous, you look like Jesus. God gives without limits, and He calls us to be like Him. Whether you have wealth or are in debt, you can be generous. Here’s the real why and how of generosity. Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap (Luke 6:38). The scene is of purchasing something where what’s measured out doesn’t come to you short, skimpy, or even fair but in good measurement. You get more than you expected. The idea is that the measured grain is pressed down. Think of your last Chipotle* bowl (*Not yet a sponsor). Did you have to ask the guy behind the counter, “Can I get a little more rice/chicken/whatever?” No, all the space between your Chipotle bottom container and the aluminum top should be filled. That’s a good bowl. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you (Luke 6:38). I don’t know the heavenly algorithm, but I know you shouldn’t give to get. That’s not the right heart God’s after. Something godly happens when your behavior toward others is gracious and with godly motives. If you think God has some holy abacus in the sky, you’re probably not doing your best thinking about giving. Your generosity should be more about the size of your heart than the size of your portfolio. If you aren’t generous when you have $1,000 you probably won’t be generous when you have $100 million.

THE POWER OF GENEROSITY: We may never be more like Jesus than when we practice generosity. Even when we’re living from paycheck to paycheck, we can still find ways to be generous. We just need to be open to the possibilities.

TAKE ACTION

Generous or stingy? What’s one area where you’re the most stingy? Reminder: Giving isn’t only about money. But make no mistake, generosity can include money. If you’re strapped for cash, you can be generous with your time, listening, praying, and encouragement. Encouragement doesn’t rob you of your baby steps. Pick one of your most stingy areas and ask God for help with being generous. When you do and say godly things, you’re not just “helping others” or “being nice,” you’re showing your family the God you follow. This week, give your wife and kids the generous God you serve.
