In this self-promoting world, true humility is a magnet. Proverbs 12:9 calls us to model humility, drawing us and others closer to Christ. Let’s examine why humility matters, especially in this world so focused on self, and how humility offers authenticity the world craves. 1. Humility is about your heart. Better to be lowly and have a servant than to play the great man and lack bread (Prov. 12:9). Jesus humbled Himself as a man gentle and lowly in heart (Matt. 11:29). It’s better to be lowly than to play the great man. You know the self-important guy, always talking about his past, his plans, and naming names. That guy pushes folks away. 2. Humility is about serving others. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another (1 Peter 5:5). Don’t be the guy who never volunteers yet always complains. Fault-finding isn’t a spiritual gift, it’s satanic. Put on your work clothes, ready to serve your wife and kids before yourself. You’re not superior or self-sufficient. Being humble means you have an others-first heart. 3. Humility is about loving God. The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor (Prov 15:33). Fearing God is the fork in the road to wisdom. Fear God and then keep fearing Him. When you fear God, your actions transform. Wisdom follows the man who follows God.

WHY HUMILITY MATTERS SO MUCH: In a world that challenges us to “look out for No. 1,” humility can be hard to come by. Especially for guys, putting the needs of others above our own plans and desires can feel unnatural. We’re tempted to write it off as a quaint concept held over from a simpler time. Truth is, genuine humility never goes out of style. It’s an eternal virtue that draws people to Jesus because it reflects His character. And, as we’ll see in Proverbs 12, it’s a character quality God expects men who follow Him to nurture in their lives.

TAKE ACTION

Be humble. Humility isn’t weakness; it’s strength under control. Humility is a virtue that draws people to Jesus because it reflects who He is. This week, practice humility: 1) Check your heart: Be still, get quiet, and ask yourself whether you’re pursuing what God wants or what you want. 2) Serve others: Listen and recognize the needs around you. 3) Do something: Do the next right thing. Start by getting in God’s Word; that way you know what God wants. Recognize humility as the strength it is, rather than a weakness, and watch how it transforms your life and relationships.
