“Many of us exhibit outward success while struggling internally,” writes Orv Kimbrough in Twice Over A Man. As busy dads, we have to navigate two worlds—work and home life. We sat down with Orv for the Father On Purpose Podcast. I came away with this. As a dad, you’re called to be present, provide, and protect. #1 Present: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed (Isaiah 41:10). God is present. For you, this means being dependable—being around—maybe working less. Be engaged, sharing life with your kids. You’re called to be present—emotionally available—giving support and encouragement. #2 Provide: Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Prov. 18:21). God provides. Yes, providing means food/cash/shelter/clothing. But don’t forget this: you’re called to provide life by how you speak. Guard what your kids hear from your mouth. Be intentional about who influences your kid. Your words have the power to crush or build futures. You provide life, health, and safety in your words. #3 Protect: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty (Ps. 91:1). God, the Most High, is superior to all other powers. No one and nothing is safer than being with God—in the shadow of the Almighty. Walk closely with Him and find protection. Loneliness and isolation are around every corner and in every bedroom. You’re called to protect your family. Create a safe place where your kids feel secure.

TAKE ACTION

Outward success? We can get so off track here. Outward success can happen, all while struggling at home. That’s not success. Make your goal to be faithful in your home—and reflect God to your family. See yourself as God sees you. God is present, provides, and protects. Now, God does all that for your family. It’s not on you. But, imagine growing up in a home where dad lives like God. He actively listens and speaks words of life. No, you can’t be perfect like God; but you can take one more step in faithfulness each day. Strengthen your relationship with God, and all other relationships will be strengthened.
