You may read this headline and think, “Huh? We don’t have idols in our house?” (Do TV’s or iPhones count?). Yikes. Psa 115:1 opens with, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory…”. You probably don’t have tiny shrines with fake gods in your foyer. Yet, you may have things sitting on the throne of your heart that take the place of God. Things you trust, rely on or look to for hope and joy. My pastor recently shared a convicting list that can help us identify idolatry in our lives. Do you or your kids have any idols hiding behind these?

  • What’s the source of my biggest disappointment?
  • What do I complain about the most?
  • What do I sacrifice time & money for?
  • What do I worry about?
  • What do I turn to for comfort when I’m hurting?

What is Salvation?: The character of Jesus is not forceful. He’s not going to reach into the ditch of sin we slipped into and pull us out against our desire for Him. Though we are in need of Him to save us and restore our hearts, God’s given us the choice (John 3:16). It’s our decision to receive the free gift of salvation in faith and begin walking with Jesus to experience the peace that surpasses understanding (John 14:27) in every corner of our life.

Romans 12: Three (not so) easy steps toward harmony: Ever feel like the world is spinning out of control? As guys, we recognize the problem, but we’re often at a loss for creating a solution. We’re not sure how to calm the confusion and get all the pieces of the puzzle back into place. Thankfully, God provides a plan where we fall short. In Romans 12, the apostle Paul wrote about the secret sauce that brings harmony out of our chaos. And, as we’ll see in today’s episode, he put the responsibility of making it happen squarely on our shoulders.

“When anything in life is an absolute requirement for your happiness and self-worth, it is essentially an idol, something you are actually worshiping.”
– Tim Keller

“There is nothing so abominable in the eyes of God and of men as idolatry, whereby men render to the creature that honor which is due only to the Creator.”
– Blaise Pascal

“You don’t have to go to heathen lands today to find false gods. America is full of them. Whatever you love more than God is your idol.”
– D. L. Moody

TAKE ACTION

De-Idolize. You may have been stung by some items on the list above. Some of those hit just a bit too close to home. And, sure, not every one of those answers is necessarily idolatrous. You might sacrifice time and money to be an engaged father. Some discernment is needed. But, still, you might need to remove an idol or two in your life. Go after it with a vengeance. Help your kids find theirs too!
