APPLY SCRIPTURE

I’ve been enjoying the book True Spirituality: Becoming a Romans 12 Christian, by Chip Ingram. One thing he reframes in it is the idea of surrender to God. Often we think of that as “giving up” so much (our hopes, dreams, favorite ice cream). Chip says, “We live as though a total commitment to God would be a crushing blow to our personal dreams…”. Yet, it’s this total commitment that unlocks God’s best and biggest plans for our life. As dads, we need to demonstrate this. We set no dream or goal above God’s. We are in submission and surrender to God’s plans, not chopping through the forest of life, blazing our own trail. In his most desperate hour, Jesus prayed for the cup of crucifixion to pass from Him. Yet, He surrendered to God’s will, “…He fell on his face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.'” (Matt 26:36-56). In doing this, He fulfilled His purpose and possesses the name above all names. Let’s set a Christlike example. Surrender. Totally.

GAIN INSIGHT

Let God have your life; He can do more with it than you can.”
– Dwight L. Moody

“When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die. It may be a death like that of the first disciples who had to leave home and work to follow Him, or it may be a death like Luther’s, who had to leave the monastery and go out into the world. But it is the same death every time – death in Jesus Christ, the death of the old man at His call.”
– Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.”
– Andrew Murray

TAKE ACTION

Surrender. What are you holding onto with such white-knuckled passion that you think God will “take” from you if you surrender to Him? Your corner office? Your status? Your season tickets? Your investment portfolio? Maybe, just maybe, He wants to use those things to honor Him and make a kingdom impact. Why don’t you surrender it all and find out? (Oh, and after you’ve done that – ask your kids the same question above. After.)
