You can look faithful to everyone outside of your house and miss the people God has put under your roof. 1 Timothy 5:8 reminds us that faith lives at home in how we serve, connect, and care for the folks closest to us.

#1 Take responsibility. “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives…” Paul’s talking about believers stepping up to care for family members in need. But the principle reaches into our homes too: godly men run to the need, not away from it.

Take responsibility rather than avoid it. Providing for your family often includes paying the bills, but you know your family needs more than your paycheck. They need you to be present: to listen, encourage, and guide them.

#2 Start at home. “…and especially for members of his household…” Paul says we’re to care for those in need, especially those under our own roof. Maybe you’ve noticed how it’s sometimes easier to serve at church, help a friend, or do well at work than to be home and love the people who know you best.

Your family shouldn’t get your leftovers while everybody else gets your best. Your faith should show up in how you serve your wife, engage with your kids, honor your parents (yes, including your in-laws), and serve the people God has put in front of you.

#3 Make sure your faith is real. “…he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” Paul isn’t saying we earn salvation by caring for our families. He’s saying our lives should match what we say we believe.

You can deny the faith by what you do (or don’t do), even while saying all the right things. Following Jesus should produce a love your family can see and feel. They don’t just need to hear that you care; they need to see it.

Don’t make this more complicated than Paul did. The point is, when God puts someone in your life with a need, don’t look the other way. Home is one of the first places our faith gets tested.

God calls us to live in a way that matches our beliefs. In Paul’s day, even unbelievers understood the responsibility to care for family. We should do more, not less, because we know what sacrifice looks like. Your kids are learning about what responsibility, care, and following Jesus look like by watching you.

So take some time to reflect on where your family needs you to take more responsibility.

Your faith speaks most when people closest to you can see it.
