Dads tell us all the time. Sounds like this: “I just can’t do it all.” The stressed out dad continues, “I don’t have enough skill, patience, experience, or knowledge to raise these kids! And, oh, the time! I never have enough time to do all I want to do. I’m just not succeeding as a father.” Au contraire mon frère! Paul prayed for God to remove the thorn in his flesh (2 Cor 12). God said no. But He didn’t leave Paul hanging. He promised “…My grace is sufficient for you…”. Then, Paul doubled down by agreeing he would “…boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses…”. Dad, accept the fact that you are not the end-all-be-all for your kids. God is. His grace is sufficient for you, and for them. Give it your best, but don’t try to be God. That role is taken.

– John Newton
“Within each of us exists the image of God, however disfigured and corrupted by sin it may presently be. God is able to recover this image through grace as we are conformed to Christ.”
– Alister McGrath
“One who has been touched by grace will no longer look on those who stray as ‘those evil people’ or ‘those poor people who need our help.’ Grace teaches us that God loves because of who God is, not because of who we are.”
– Phillips Brooks
TAKE ACTION
Ask for cover. This week, consider naming one area in your fatherhood role where you feel the most incompetent. Maybe it’s in Bible knowledge, patience, finances, or communication. Whatever it is, tell God that you will strive to improve, but as you’re growing, would He please cover that area with His grace! Give it your best effort and ask God to cover what you’re missing. He’s great at that.
