“I live in South Africa and have been tracking with Manhood Journey since 2021…”, were the words from a dad’s recent voice message. We break down his message on the Father On Purpose Podcast—don’t miss it below. But quick, here’s what jumped out at me from his message for us dads. #1 Recognize you can’t fix everything. This dad’s message started with his daughter…she’s two years old and it seems she’s taking her sweet time to develop her speech…we took her to the doctor…she has underdeveloped nerves in the ear… Dad, you can’t be the expert on everything. Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise (Eph. 5:15). Maybe your kid’s learning a musical instrument/gymnastics/football/gaming, you can’t pretend to know it all. Point: When you’re walking through a challenge, you don’t have to be the expert. #2 Realize you should engage anyway. This dad continued….by no means is this a plea for pity but a call to arms…rather than being passive and leaving most of the kids’ stuff to your wife I implore you…I went with my wife and child to the doctor. I was there and fully present. It meant the world to them…that I demonstrated they are a priority in my life. If you can’t engage perfectly, still engage! Many dads walk off the field because they feel they can’t do things perfectly. Paul said, make the best use of the time, because the days are evil (Eph. 5:16). Point: The best use of your time is often being present.

LEARNING TO “BE THERE” AS A MAN: Time is humanity’s most precious resource, and the time that a dad has to invest in and encourage his family is even more priceless. In a culture that demands a piece of you at every turn, it can be tough to know how to make the most of the moments we’re given as fathers. Thankfully, God has given us His thoughts through His Word, and men who want to know how to “be there” in good times and bad can learn from His wisdom.

TAKE ACTION

Unsure where to start? The dad who left the voice message said it: As fathers who don’t know what they’re doing sometimes you don’t need to know how to fix everything but it is enough that you are there in the brokenness fully present. “Presence in the brokenness” —I love that. As God is there in the darkest moments, you can be there for your family too. You could pull away/grow distant; I know plenty of dads who have. But avoidance is rarely the solution. Instead, the solution is most often pursuing/running toward your family/being present. Look for God’s presence with you; then reflect that presence to your family. Let’s go.
