Matthew 3:16–17 tells us about Jesus being baptized. He came up from the water and God said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Don’t we all want to hear this? From God, and well, from our earthly father too? Let’s look at Matthew and John for two lessons from God that we need to make known to our kids. #1 God loves you. When Jesus came up from the water after being baptized, he received love from God, His Father. Do you love your son? Sure you do. But let’s get real: Does your son know you love him? We see from John 1:35-42 Jesus asked, “What are you seeking?” Jesus wanted to serve. If you’re wondering whether your son knows you love him; try asking something like Jesus did: How can I help you? Then show your love by serving him. #2 God is pleased with you. Jesus came up from the water and God gave His approval. Don’t we all want to gain our Father’s approval? John 1:35-42 shows Jesus also answered a question with, “Come and you will see.” As a dad, are you giving your son the heart of Christ? Do you walk around the house with a sense of “walk with me and I’ll show you.” If your son knows he can walk with you and see a good example, he just might be able to also recognize how God can be pleased with him. 

CRAIG BOWLER: WANTS VS. NEEDS. In a world where guys are supposed to have it all together, admitting any kind of need or weakness seems like a dangerous proposition. But, as pastor Craig Bowler reminds us, Jesus often comes to us with a simple question: “What do you want?” Becoming the man God created you to be involves letting Jesus show you the “wants” you may not even realize you have—and letting Him be the One who meets those deepest needs.
