When I mention giving – especially in late December – what comes to mind? Gifts! Maybe they’re in stockings hung from the chimney with care, or in brown paper packages tied up with strings (wait, wrong musical). Gifts are fun to get, and even funner to give. Each gift costs us something. Could be money, or time. Or both. Either way, we have to possess a resource to give the gift. We need some extra cash or time on our hands for that to overflow in generosity to those around us. One of the best gifts God has ever given us is the Holy Spirit. Out of God’s gracious surplus, He overflowed into the heart of the believer this amazing friend and guide, but not for us to keep to ourselves. Toward the end of his letter to the Romans, Paul blessed them by saying, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Rom 15:13) We are to abound in hope! I pray this week – as we head into gift-getting-and-giving time – we remember that we can live in a state of overflow. Perhaps not financially or materially, but spiritually. We have access to the gift that allows us to overflow with hope in our homes. Merry Christmas!
