Dads tell us all the time that they wrestle finding enough time with their kids. In a recent survey we sent out, one dad said, “The weeks fly by so fast and it seems hard to prioritize…”. Man, isn’t that true? We don’t often find ourselves with hours and hours of free time to engage our kids in meaningful discussion. Often we’re just going from one thing, place, recital or game to the next. Yet, let’s take a lesson from the master disciple maker, Jesus Himself. After His resurrection, he catches up with two people on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). They were headed somewhere, loaded with thoughts, caught up in the current events. Jesus came alongside them – during their real life – while they were going from one place to another. He listened. He engaged. He explained. He radically change their lives by meeting them where they were and speaking life into their hearts. In a similar way, we dads can come alongside our kids as they’re coming and going. We can turn a walk, a drive or a routine errand into a life-altering moment if we’re attentive and willing.

TAKE ACTION

Listen well. What’s super interesting about this road to Emmaus story for me is that, more than likely, Jesus already knew what the two people would say. He could’ve walked right up to them and started talking. Yet, first, he listened. Especially in today’s hyper-messaging-all-the-time world, listening well is a superpower. Dads can unlock moments just by listening better. Often, open ears precede open hearts.
