When you or your kids need to work through big decisions, do you ask the LORD for wisdom? I frequently feel capable, experienced and intelligent enough to make tons of decisions. I can pick a good AirBNB. I know to lift with my legs. I know better than to connect through ATL unless I just really want to spend the night on an airport bench. For many things, my own brain will do just fine. Yet, I probably become over reliant on my own know-how and don’t ask God for wisdom often enough. You’d think the older I get, the more I’d realize the value of God’s wisdom, but it seems to work in reverse. I want to guard against become foolishly self-reliant and I want to encourage my kids to keep seeking Godly wisdom too. Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” I want to be an increasingly effective listener.

You Can Overcome Anxiety: Part 2: When a basketball player steps to the line for a free throw, he has to be relaxed. He also has to trust the countless hours of repetition he has invested in the process. In some ways, overcoming worry works the same way. We serve a mighty God who is absolutely trustworthy. So, we can relax and rest in Him. On top of that, the more we put that trust into practice, the easier it becomes to replace our anxieties with faith in Him. In today’s episode, we’ll continue our conversation about kicking worry to the curb by sharing some practical ideas for growing in our faith.

GAIN INSIGHT

“To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.” – Charles Spurgeon.

“The chief means for attaining wisdom, and suitable gifts for the ministry, are the Holy Scriptures, and prayer.” – John Newton.

“Not until we have become humble and teachable, standing in awe of God’s holiness and sovereignty; acknowledging our own littleness, distrusting our own thoughts, and willing to have our minds turned upside down, can divine wisdom become ours.” – J.I. Packer.

TAKE ACTION

Seek wisdom. I like to compare wisdom to alignment. When my thoughts, intentions, beliefs and desires are aligned with God’s, I’m wise. When they’re not, I’m foolish. This week, let’s seek Godly wisdom. Maybe you have a major decision to make. Or, one of your kids needs to pick between two equally valuable options and it’s a tough call. Seek God and His wisdom and encourage your kids to join you.
