APPLY SCRIPTURE

“Whoever wants the next generation the most is going to get them,” explained Alex and Stephen Kendrick on a recent episode of the Father On Purpose Podcast. The world is after our kids’ hearts and minds. As believers, we must pursue our families. Hebrews 3:12-13 warns: “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” These verses get at what’s stopping you from making disciples: #1 Feeling Unqualified: If you feel unequipped, focus on God. He honors faithful service. Discipleship means shifting your desires to His. A godly dad relies on God, making him qualified. #2 Messing Up After Mistakes: Confess, repent, and talk openly with your kids about your struggles. Share how your Bible reading or a sermon convicted you. Ask your kids if you’ve failed to keep any promises. The key isn’t avoiding mistakes but how you respond afterward. Encourage your kids daily. Allow me to parse the ancient Greek—every day means “every day”. #3 Self-Deception: Don’t deceive yourself into thinking Jesus is simply one part of your life. If your kids only see you worship on Sunday, it’s likely not enough. Your kids need to see Jesus as your top priority each day. Sin deceives by making disobedience appealing and hiding consequences, hardening your heart against God.
