In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses gave the Israelites his “last words” before he passed, and they entered the promised land. As a piece of his parting challenge, he urged parents to teach their kids how to know God, own their faith, and proclaim their faith to others (Deuteronomy 6). The challenge is still present today. And while pen and paper still work, you have more options for discipling your kids through family devotions online. Through the internet and apps, you can expose your family to the riches of God’s Word with a simple click.
Start With Why, Not What
At the risk of stating the obvious, making the most of family devotions online begins with a commitment to having family devotions. So, before you dig into what you want to use, you need to get a solid handle on why you’re doing it. Understanding your motivation and what you’re hoping to accomplish is a huge step in getting started and maintaining focus.
Once you understand your ‘why’, you can move toward defining how you want to do it. For example, making family devotions work at your house is easier than you think. Every family is different, so every approach will be different. But you need to take some time to figure out what will work best for you.
From there, you’re ready to see what’s available for kicking off your family devotions online. Below, we’ve identified seven tried and true options. Some are ongoing. For those, you simply subscribe, and the devotions come to your computer or through the app regularly. Others are short-term studies that focus on certain topics for a set period of time.
Neither approach is right nor wrong. Again, what matters is what will keep your family engaged. Spending time together in God’s Word is the definition of success. The family devotion you choose is up to you.
7 Great Family Devotions to do Online
1. Right Now Media.
For years, Right Now Media has been at the forefront of media-driven discipleship. That includes devotional resources geared toward families. While access will require a Right Now subscription, the site’s selections include short-term studies that cover both topics and books of the Bible. Each study also has additional resources that support the study.
2. YouVersion.
While YouVersion is typically known as the world’s most popular online Bible app, the company also publishes devotions that cover a wide range of topics, including devotions for families, Bible reading plans for men, and even devotionals on anger. Most of the YouVersion offerings last for a week to 10 days, though some run for as long as a month. Best of all, the studies are free and can be accessed through the YouVersion website or by downloading the app.
3. Seeds Family Worship.
The primary online family devotion provided by Seeds is called “Fun, Easy Family Devotions.” This series is built around 20 key verses that every family should learn and understand. Each of the verses is supported by four devotions, so this option could last for a while. Even better, Seeds provides songs and videos to help family members actually hide God’s Word in their hearts. If you use the Seeds app, you can also listen to the devotions as a family.
4. Hands-On Faith for Families (Crosswalk).
This devotional series is housed on Crosswalk.com, but it is based on content from Focus on the Family. With a subscription, a new activity-based devotion is delivered each week. For families just starting out or who have limited time during the week, this could be a great option for an online family devotional.
5. Josh.org.
For decades, Josh McDowell has been pointing individuals toward Jesus through his speaking and his writing. Now, as part of his partnership with CRU ministries, McDowell’s website also provides family devotions. These story-based devotions would be helpful for families with older children or younger teens. The devotions are delivered every day and require a subscription.
6. HomeWord.
Like Josh McDowell, Jim Burns has been serving individuals and churches for a long time with HomeWord—especially in the area of marriage and parenting. In these devotions, Burns teams up with student ministry expert Doug Fields to provide thought-provoking family devotions online that will draw the entire family into the message of the Bible.
7. Go Minno.
For those unfamiliar with the ministry of Go Minno, the app streams video-based Christian content geared toward kids. But it also uses that content to provide video-based online devotions for families. Access does require a paid subscription like other streaming services; however, the content is all faith-based and reliable.
Use Technology for Good
Let’s be honest; our culture is obsessed with technology. And for many, social media dominates their lives. But while technology can be dangerous if it’s abused, it also can be a great tool for sharing the gospel and discipling believers.
As a parent, it just makes sense to make the most of technology, using it in a way that blesses your family. Online family devotions are one way to take advantage of technology by using it to raise a new generation that loves God and pursues Him with a passion.
